What does Laptop No Power - Short Circuit mean?

Laptop shows no power signs despite known-good charger. Short circuit on power rail preventing startup.

Common causes

• Shorted DC power jack
• Liquid damage causing power rail short
• Failed MOSFET on primary power rail
• Shorted capacitor on motherboard
• Failed charging IC

Diagnostic & testing steps

1. 1. Measure voltage at DC jack: should match adapter voltage exactly
2. 2. Measure current draw of laptop with DCPS at 19-20V - if drawing >3A immediately, board-level short
3. 3. Freeze test: apply component cooler, monitor if current drops (identifies shorted component)
4. 4. Check for visible liquid damage, corrosion, or burned components
5. 5. Identify and test primary power rail MOSFETs with diode mode
6. 6. Remove battery and try AC only - isolates battery vs board short
